Central Texas midseason high school football report
Last season was arguably the best in Central Texas history, with Lake Travis and Liberty Hill winning state titles and Pflugerville and Copperas Cove making it to state finals. But it looks like 2008 may give 2007 a run for its money, as those teams are a combined 21-1.
Lake Travis got a new coach in Chad Morris and the team has embraced his no-huddle attack to the tune of 251 points so far. It probably would be wise not to pick against the Cavaliers — something I've done three times this year, only to see Lake Travis win all three games by a combined score of 120-57.
It'll be shocking if any of those four teams don't make another deep playoff run, but should they falter, only teams like Stony Point, Georgetown and Austin High have been solid enough to suggest they'd be a tough out in November and December.
Player of the year?
Through six games, Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert has four more touchdowns, seven fewer interceptions and more than 100 passing yards more than what he had at the same point in 2007. And in case you need a refresher, he set three state passing records last season.
